Takeaways From ICANN’s Meeting With the LAC Technical Community

24 February 2023
By

I am happy to report that on 8 February in Montevideo, Uruguay, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers organization (ICANN org) staff participated in the first 2023 meeting hosted by the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) technical community. It was a successful meeting, which I believe portends a productive year at ICANN and for the ICANN community. Headquartered at Casa de Internet for Latin America and the Caribbean in Montevideo, the LAC technical community includes:

This meeting was dedicated to strengthening regional commitments. ICANN and our LAC technical organization partners presented their top priorities for 2023 and we discussed our common goals. We also held bilateral sessions to identify common interests and promote joint collaboration. Below are some of the topics discussed.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is viewed as the greatest risk to Internet development in the LAC region. In response, we discussed the creation of a coalition to advance Internet security and resilience. This included developing a set of relevant indicators on the improvement of Internet security for decision-makers, stronger participation in cybersecurity spaces, and awareness-building and training activities for the community.

Illegal Content

Together with our LAC technical partners, we have continued to promote capacity-building opportunities related to illegal content. The LAC community agreed to coordinate and redesign the Illegal Content Workshop, which was traditionally led by LACTLD. This course brings together prosecutors, law enforcement officers, members of the judiciary, cybersecurity professionals, and Internet stakeholders to discuss relevant topics.

The Future of the LAC Internet Governance Forum (LACIGF)

The LAC community also acknowledged current efforts to further empower the LACIGF community, advance the implementation of the new LACIGF Bylaws, and implement a new organizational structure. We look forward to seeing progress in the coming years.

Latin American and Caribbean School of Digital Transformation and Innovation

After the successful 2022 meeting hosted by the Latin American and Caribbean School of Digital Transformation and Innovation, the LAC technical community coordinated with the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society to organize the 2023 meeting in September in São Paulo. This meeting will provide a unique space for multistakeholder participation in providing up-to-date information to policymakers faced with problems that require immediate solutions.

Regular Events

As you can see, the cadence of regular annual meetings continues to reflect the diversity of Internet-related initiatives and the strengthening of Internet access and security in the region. ICANN76, scheduled to be held in March in Cancún, Mexico, will include a LAC Space session. This is an exclusive opportunity for regional stakeholders to conduct a strategic dialogue. I look forward to seeing you there. In May, Mérida, Mexico, will host LACNIC 39, which brings together activities such as LACNOG presentations, the LAC-IX LAC Peering Forum, and many others. In October, the LACNIC 40-LACNOG 2023 meeting will continue to offer high-value activities for the construction of our community.

This year's stakeholder engagements continue to reflect the commitment and hard work of the LAC technical community. Together with our partners, we look forward to helping make the Internet more accessible and secure in the region.
